Theories Used throughout the resource
Groupwork is one of the main theories used in this resource with a view to enable children and young people to reflect on their own behaviours. The benefits of groupwork can have a positive impact on young people.
Cognitive behavioural theories are also considered in this resource. It is a relationship between thinking and actions and helping people to change. Streetwise will help young people to consider other opinions, be aware of their emotions and study their behaviour as a result of thoughts and feelings.
Solution focused approach Streetwise explores issues of anger management and effective decision making.
Feminist theories are acknowledged in Streetwise as they can especially relate to girl gangs. Streetwise aims to address oppression which women experience through gang involvement, thus explaining reasons for girl only gangs where they can gain control and autonomy. In a mixed gang with males girls are oppressed and used, males would dominate all decisions.
Girls are given the opportunity to speak out and feel that they are worthy to be heard and listened to therefore giving them an increased level of self- respect.
Task centred work has a place in Streetwise, it allows the group to agree that they will look at problems and then agree ways in which they can solve them. By completing various tasks within each unit the students will demonstrate their willingness to make changes in their life.
Mind mapping theories are used throughout the Streetwise programme.Pioneered by Tony Buzan Mind mapping is a powerful technique allowingchildren and young people to make the best use of their brain power.
Mind mapping (or brain training) involves writing down a central idea and thinking up new and related ideas which stem out from the centre. Mind mapping is an important technique that improves the way the human brain stores information. It provides a structure which encourages children and young people to creative problem solving, and enables them to hold information in a format which their minds will find easy to remember and review.
